Guild Wars

Guild Wars: free-to-play massively multiplayer online game

Guild Wars is an online game which people all over the world can play together, at the same time. Once you have bought Guild Wars and installed it, you play without paying a monthly fee.

Guild Wars uses instancing for the game play. This means that you, and the small group that you are playing with, have your own little space in the game. Only the outposts - the towns and the Guild Halls - give you the ability to interact with all the players who are online in that area. While you can chat and dance in outposts, you cannot fight.

If you want to chat privately to another player, you can do that using the Whisper option. The private message will reach the player anywhere in the game, but only while that player is logged on.

Characters reach a maximum level of 20.

The main charm of the game lies in the use of available skills. While characters can - and often do - learn every skill in the game, they may only bring eight of those with them at any time. This set of skills is called a Build.

Players may only change builds in an outpost, and not while instanced in an explorable area or mission. You can develop different builds for different purposes, but you must be sure to load the right build before you start!

Guild Wars offers two types of game experience: Player vs Environment (PvE) and Player vs Player (PvP).

PvE mostly covers playing the game storyline, and involves fighting against game-generated foes.

PvP is a competitive playing mode, where you actually aim to defeat real players in a battle of skills. There are several arenas offering different challenges.

Most wanted drops in Guild Wars

When you defeat a foe, he usually drops some kind of loot. In Guild Wars, items are reserved for particular players, so a good drop can't be easily stolen from you.

Some drops are only available in certain campaigns. The most wanted drops available to all campaigns in Guild Wars are:

Globs of Ectoplasm. These are used for making Obsidian armour and  Chaos Gloves. These only drop in the Underworld.

Obsidian Shards. These are used for making Obsidian armour. These only drop in the Fissure of Woe.

Black dye. The most popular colour for armour, and the most expensive dye.

Green weapons. These are weapons with the name in green writing. They are dropped by bosses. They are often incredibily useless, but for some reason, everyone is always excited to get one, probably because they were very rare in the first campaign.

Rune of Superior Vigor. These are occasionally attached to a piece of armour with its name in gold. Armour pieces that drop are always identified, so there is always the Is it or isn't it moment of anticipation before you use the identification kit.

Quick facts about Guild Wars

  • The original campaign, Prophecies, launched in April 2005 with six professions: Warrior, Ranger, Elementalist, Mesmer, Necromancer and Monk.
  • Factions launched a year later, in April 2006, and introduced two new professions, being Ritualist and Monk.
  • In October 2006, Guild Wars launched Nightfall, which introduced the Dervish and the Paragon, and also added Heroes into the mix. The compass was upgraded and players now had the ability to position their Non-Player Characters (NPCs) more accurately.
  • In 2007 Guild Wars launched a Campaign Extension, Eye of the North, which was only accessible to existing characters. Originally characters had to be level 20 to enter, but later this was dropped to level 10. Low-level characters entering the area were artificially boosted. Eye of the North brought a new set of heroes with it.
  • Guild Wars 2 is currently in development.
